animal-free yarn database

find plant fibers and synthetic yarns

I hope that this list makes it easier for you to find animal-free yarn alternatives for your knitting (or other fiber projects).

Questions?

What kind of yarns are in this database?

This database includes plant-based and synthetic yarns. Plant-based like cotton, linen, bamboo, hemp – and synthetic like polyacrylic, (recycled) polyester, nylon.

I’ve thought long about including synthetic yarns because I’d love to promote the use of plant-based yarns as much as possible. However I do understand that affordability also plays into yarn selection, and for some projects synthetic fibers are necessary, such as for socks.

The yarns in this database are animal-fiber-free. No merino, mohair, cashmere, alpaca, silk… Unfortunately, I cannot check every yarn in this database if the entire production process (for example the dyes used) are also vegan so I’d encourage you to do your own research if these things are important to you.

This database currently has over 270 yarns – and will be updated regularly. If you know of a yarn alternative that is not included yet, please let me know! I’d appreciate that a lot. You can message me on instagram knit.by.sarah.

You will receive a link to a notion page where you can find the yarn database. There you will also find instructions.
Yes. The database includes information on fiber content, brand, yarn weight, yarn length, recommended needle size, gauge information (where available by the brand) and you can filter by each. If you are looking for 100% plant-based yarns (no acrylic etc), you can for example exclude these in the filter.
I have been vegan for over 8 years and started knitting 4 years ago. In the beginning, I’ve been struggling to find vegan yarn alternatives that would create the same beautiful results that I saw people make with animal fiber yarns. I did a lot of research and wanted to put all my findings into this database to help others find the right yarns for their projects – whether you are also vegan or allergic to wool!

Yes, absolutely! I’d appreciate that a lot. You can message me on instagram knit.by.sarah.

I’d love to hear your feedback on this project! I spend a lot of time and energy to create this database and would love to hear from you if you find it helpful. Also, if you find any mistakes or something is missing, let me know, please. You can message me on instagram knit.by.sarah.

Don’t worry, this plant based yarn database is and will always be a free resource. I’ve created this database out of love and passion for (vegan) knitting and don’t earn any more with it.

But I want to be 100% transparent with you. I’ve started my knitting account knit.by.sarah with the long-term goal to work with brands and partners to create more visibility for plant-based knitting. To do so, it helps me to have a professional appearance which is why I decided to create this website (also my job is making websites so I just couldn’t help it!). I’d also love to have an overview of how many people have downloaded my database.

If you’d like to receive updates (when I add new yarns to this database, or other plant based knitting resources), you can opt in to that. But you absolutely don’t have to and can always unsubscribe as well.
